As Operation Desert Storm coalition forces advanced into Kuwait, the Iraqi military forces set fire to hundreds of oil wells as they retreated in January and February 1991. Then 20-year-old Airman 1st Class Jay Latham was a weather observer assigned to King Fahd Air Base, Dharan, Saudi Arabia, and took frequent weather observations during this time, especially prior to the launching of F-16 Falcons and A-10 Thunderbolt IIs. Latham is now a senior master sergeant in the Air Force Reserve assigned to the 403rd Wing's 53rd Weather Reconnaissance Squadron at Keesler Air Force Base, Mississippi. (Courtesy photo)
