Employers learn about Air Force Reserve

Employers of 403rd Wing Reservists learn about the dropwindsonde, a piece of equipment unique to the 53rd Weather Reconnaissance Squadron's "Hurricane Hunters" from Master Sgt. Tony Hlavac, a weather reconnaissance loadmaster with the unit during the wing's Employer Appreciation Day. Warren Mason, from Beau Rivage Casino, gives the thumbs up during a flight with the 53rd Weather Reconnaissance Squadron, better known as the Hurricane Hunters. Employers were invited to fly along with the Air Force Reserve unit to learn more about what their Reservists do while on duty with the unit.

Tony Hlavac, a weather reconnaissance loadmaster, with the 53rd Weather Reconnaissance Squadron, explains how he collects weather data aboard a WC-130J Hurricane Hunter aircraft to employer Joseph Lott of Stone Specialties Inc. The 53rd is one of two flying squadrons assigned to the 403rd Wing, an Air Force Reserve Command unit made up of more than 1,400 Reservists and stationed at Keesler Air Force Base, Miss.

Master Sgt. Tony Hlavac demonstrates the preparation of a dropsonde before it is released. This critical weather sensing equipment measures data every second from the moment it is released from the WC-130J until it hits the water's surface. Sergeant Hlavac explained the operation of dropsondes to a group of employers during an orientation flight. The employers were invited by Reservists who work for their companies to learn more about the Air Force Reserve.

Jenny Cullinan, a representative of Cellular South, enjoys an orientation flight from the flight deck of a WC-130J during the 403rd Wing's annual Employer Day. This aircraft is used by the Hurricane Hunters of the 53rd Weather Reconnaissance Squadron to gather critical weather data used by forecasters at the National Hurricane Center.
