End of Days: Keep safety in mind during Labor Day weekend Published Sept. 2, 2011 By Master Sgt. Michael Duhe 403rd Wing KEESLER AFB, MISS. -- Labor Day marks the last day of the 101 Critical Days of Summer. With that finish line in sight, the 403rd Wing Safety Office has a message for members of the wing: don't just finish the race, finish strong and safe. "Off duty accidents are a big concern on Labor Day," said Master Sgt. Elijah Ramsey, 403rd Safety Office ground safety manager. "It's a long weekend and some people will take road trips. Fatigue and complacency, as well as not wearing a seatbelt, are all dangers. We urge everyone to wear their seatbelt, because seatbelts do save lives." Drinking and driving is another danger that members of the wing should keep in mind when on the road, Ramsey added. Many Labor Day activities also involve risks, from boating and skiing to working in the yard and barbecuing. "Our message is to keep ORM (Operational Risk Management) in mind," Ramsey said. "Identify the possible risks involved in the activity and apply those risk management processes to try to eliminate hazards." The Air Force developed the 101 Critical Days of Summer campaign in the late 1960's to counter the traditional increase in mishaps and fatalities during the summer months. The 403rd Safety Office kicked off this year's 101 Critical Days of Summer with an awareness campaign that included informational e-mail messages sent to members of the wing and helpful advice posted on their Web site. In addition, the office provided support for commanders who wished to include safety briefings during commander's call held during the 101 Critical Days of Summer. The 403rd Wing experienced no fatalities during this year's 101 Critical Days of Summer. "We've had an extremely busy, successful and safe summer," said Col. Louis Patriquin II, 403rd Operations Group commander. "Each and every one of us has played a big role in that success. Between storm chasing, Coronet Oak, AOR support and ORI training we have seen the same bright smiling faces return to Keesler month after month. "If you are enjoying the weekend with family, take extra care on the roads," the colonel advised. "Weather could be a factor this weekend so take a little extra time if you find yourself on the road or performing the mission. We're looking forward to seeing everyone at September's UTA."
