Editor’s note: This is the second of a six-part series featuring each member of the 403rd Wing’s “Krewe” of Recruiters. Air Force Reserve recruiters find and vet future Reserve Citizen Airmen. Their job is important because they are responsible for ensuring that each new recruit has what it takes to contribute to the Air Force Reserve mission of providing combat-ready forces to fly, fight and win.

Master Sgt. Tavores Royster, in-service recruiter for the 403rd Wing’s recruiting office, began his career 20 years ago as an active duty member serving in the aircraft fuel systems career field. He later retrained into the space operations career field before being forced shaped and becoming an active duty recruiter. Four years later he transitioned from active duty and has been an Air Force Reserve recruiter ever since.

Royster answered the following questions about his experience as a recruiter.

Why did you want to become a recruiter? I wanted to become a recruiter because I thought I could make a difference by telling people the real deal about the Air Force. I wanted to help the inner city kids in Baltimore, which is where I was stationed at the time, because I thought if they were just given the opportunity they could succeed. I wanted to spread Air Force awareness and give people the opportunities I had; I’ve enjoyed my time in.

What’s the biggest advice you’d give to a new recruit? The biggest advice I’d give is to take advantage of all the opportunities given to you when you join. There’s so much the Air Force Reserve has to offer so do your research and take advantage.

What advice would you give someone who wants to be a recruiter? Be sure you’re ready to learn your craft and know the Air Force inside and out and give information in a truthful light. Be ready to get out there and be a poster board for the Air Force Reserve.

Anything you’d like to add? I’ve enjoyed my time as a recruiter, and I’m going to continue to do this as long as I’m able. The Air Force and Air Force Reserve have been great to me.
