Hurricane Hunters role in Gulf of Mexico Unmanned Systems Operational Demonstration

Air Force Reserve Citizen Airmen with the 53rd Weather Reconnaissance Squadron, Keesler Air Force Base, Mississippi, provide weather data to the National Hurricane Center in Miami. While this may be their typical mission, the “Hurricane Hunters” spent May 30 to June 1, 2017, providing weather information for the U.S. Navy’s first Gulf of Mexico Oceanography Unmanned Systems Operational Demonstration. The squadron partnered with the U.S. Navy, dropping buoys and dropsondes to collect weather information for the event, to demonstrate unmanned capabilities and explore joint opportunities in support of national defense.
